The Eight of March, in the year of a thousand eight, marks a significant milestone for the Malaysian history. For nearly fives years of Badawi’s Dynasty, this day has brought to an end of it. A new dawn for Malaysia, arising new hopes and new lifes. The ruling coaltion party, Barisan National has suffered a bitter lost in the 12th General Election. The BN suffers worst electoral defeats in nearly 40 years. What had exactly happened? What-so-ever reasons gonna be, its the judgement day for BN, its the report book for the Badawi’s Government.
The Barisan National lost its standings in the two-third paliamentary seats, where they only secured 139 out of 220 seats counted for the 222-seat. While, opposition parties, DAP, PKR and PAS held the remaining 81 parliamentary seats. Whats more? The BN coalition has lost 5 states to the oppostion. They are mainly Perak, FT Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kedah and Selangor. Many unexpected and surprising outcomes were constantly reported in the evening of 8 March. Datuk Samy Vellu, Minister for Works has lost its seat in Perak, Besides Samy Vellu, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Zainuddin Maidin and Abdul Aziz Shamsuddin were also defeated in the elections.
Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has reassured the people that he will not step down as Prime Minister. In fact, the pressure has yet been released. Somehow, Abdullah was punished over rising crime and inflation in an election also tinged by rising racial tensions between majority Muslim Malays and minority ethnic Chinese and Indians. Even the former Prime Minister (my idol political figure) Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has also pointed his finger saying that PM Abdullah must bear the full resposibility for poll shock. According to Channelnewsasia.com, Mahathir cited that Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has “destroyed” the ruling coalition after disastrous weekend elections. He added that he has apparently made the wrong choice in choosing him as the Prime Minister. In addition, he said: “The problem is we (the government) have become so arrogant. We suppress any opinion that we do not like and they begin to believe in their own reports which are not actually consistent with what is happening in the country.” In all, I still prefer the Mahathir legacy, the Mahathir Way.
On the other hand, its the rising of the Ex-Deputy Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim. In fact, I like his way when speaking to media, to the public and to the world stages. He gave me and my friends a “long lost” kinda self confidence and self supportive. Moreover, he know his point well, and he can deliver. The spirit that has lost after the resigning of Former PM Mahathir.
Whatever it gonna be…its in fact, new hope and dawn for all Malaysians. Who has won is not the critical issue anymore…its more importantly to assess if they can deliver what the people wants. Can Malaysia become much better off? Can Malaysia be at a competitive stage? Can Malaysia stands out in the International Arena? Its just the start for the next report card, and the results, well, we will see that in 5 years’ time. Keranamu Malaysia! and MALAYSIA BOLEH!
